Communication

The primary way leaders communicate is through words, what you say and how you say it. Leaders know it is their responsibility to cast the vision and communicate that vision to everyone in the organization. This means repetition, saying it repeatedly until everyone can say it in their sleep.

Let’s take a look at the other ways in which leaders communicate so you are firing on all cylinders.

Your nonverbal communication is just as important and sometimes even more so. A smile, a frown, a look of satisfaction or bewilderment can all signal to an employee whether they are headed in the right direction, or a conversation needs to occur.

Strong leaders also know the power of the written word. An encouraging email, a handwritten note of thanks, a post on social media, newsletters, directives, and articles are all valuable vehicles one can use to supplement his or her words in casting the vision and accomplishing the mission. Be careful what you are write does not contradict what you say and do not underestimate the power of a personal thank you note.

Leaders know that they cannot be everywhere at once. You must have others who are on board delivering your message in the meetings, by the water cooler and in the parking lot. These are your Lieutenant’s acting as a megaphone for your voice. If your message is not getting through, then you need to find the right influencers and champions in your organization to get your message delivered.
